The global fast-food chain has removed a holiday advert created using generative AI following encountering considerable criticism on social media.

The 45-second film was developed using AI-generated video and was first published on the YouTube channel for McDonald's Netherlands on 6 December.

Audience Criticism and Decision to Pull

Soon after it aired, viewers on social media denounced the use of AI in the commercial. Several called it "creepy" and "jarringly assembled".

"This incident represents an key learning as we examine the effective utilization of generative technology," stated a spokesperson from McDonald's Netherlands.

The commercial was created for McDonald's by Netherlands-based company TBWA\Neboko and US production company The Sweetshop. It depicted a series of scenarios that might go awry over the festive season, with the tagline "the most terrible time of the year".

The Phenomenon of AI Commercials

Campaigns that incorporate AI tools have become a growing trend among major companies, notably for the holiday season.

  • Another beverage giant has similarly released consecutive AI-generated holiday ads.
  • Technical Challenges: Because clips made using generative AI are more likely to distort the more extended they are, most such clips tend to be roughly a few seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The ad also provoked fears about job displacement in the advertising industry, with some critics noting it could affect opportunities for camera crews.

Defense from the Production Company

After the ad being taken down, a producer's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, defended the advert.

She stated, the development took "over a month and a half" and involved generating "countless iterations" which were then edited afterward "just as we would on any high-craft production".

"This wasn't just an AI gimmick," Bridge asserted. "The result was a proper commercial."

Divisive Public Reception

While the Dutch McDonald's ad was largely criticized, the reception for other AI-generated campaigns has been varied.

For instance, a consecutive AI-created Christmas spot from Coca-Cola according to analysis received a significant "positive feedback" from viewers.

However, several companies have likewise encountered scrutiny for employing the technique in marketing. Italian brand Valentino, for example, was lambasted for advertisements that some described as "lazy" and "disturbing".

The episode underscores the ongoing conversation within the marketing and production sectors about the trade-off between AI efficiency and creative integrity.
