Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology This Season.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the ability to question specific calls made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
